AMI Aviation Updates MD-80 Aircraft Radar Altimeters to 5G

Sanford, FL  (March 1, 2024) – AMI Aviation Services, LLC (“AMI”) has successfully modified its first MD-80 series aircraft with FreeFlight Systems’ 5G-Tolerant Radar Altimeters.  The modification was performed for a domestic part 121 US Cargo operator in accordance with an FAA-approved STC issued by AMI’s parent company, AeroMech Incorporated, which holds Organization Designation Approval (ODA).   FreeFlight's Terrain Series radar altimeters feature the first major upgrade to RF circuitry in decades, built from the ground up, to mitigate spurious 5G interference and allow operators a path to address the Airworthiness Directives for all transport category aircraft equipped with radar altimeters.

AMI used FreeFlight Systems’ 5G C-Band resistant TERRAIN SERIES RA 6500 radar altimeters and antennas that provide:

·        Unique Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology to eliminate interference

·        Robust, reliable, and rugged enclosure designed for use in mission-critical and military environments

·        Single (RA 5500) and Dual (RA 6500) installation capabilities

·        DAL B-rated and certified to TSO-C87a and ETSO-2C87; Units are approved to DO-160G and DO-178C Level B.

AMI, together with it’s parent company AeroMech, are working on 5G Radar Altimeter upgrade solutions for the Boeing 727 and 737 models and expect to announce an STC and parts kit solution in the Q2/Q3 2024 for each of these model aircraft.
